Removes wood like lightning. Was indespensible in the building of my 15 foot wooden boat…lot’s of planning.

This tool is amazing. I own about 8 quality dewalt 18v tools, and a Makita belt sander and electric chain saw. I like quality tools that last a long time. I was concerned about reviews that said this was extremely noisy and maybe questionable quality. And the knob turning when you don’t want. Well, I’m not sure how much I’ll use a planer so I gave it a try. I carefully checked the alignment of the 2 blades vs the plane and they seemed perfect. I tightened the 6 blade holding bolts a tad. I familiarized myself with the dept knob, and it seems great, with nice indents and a mark to keep track how deep you are set. I did a lot of shaping / planing on some birch plywood on my first day. I’m making a hydrofoil. Wow, this thing is amazing. It’s quiet when not cutting wood. It’s the cutting that makes all the noise. Not too noisy but I did get ear plugs after maybe 10 min. I’d say this allows me to shape about 10-15 times faster than course grit on the belt sander. I like this tool.

What a great tool! This is the first electric hand planer I’ve ever used, and I’m surprised at how useful it is. I’m a novice woodworker, which mostly means that my work is still a bit imprecise, with lots of uneven surfaces and joints that don’t quite match. Before getting this tool, I gave my orbital sander quite a workout and went through a lot of 80-grit paper. But this tool makes the process vastly easier. It’s powerful enough to cut troughs 1/8″ deep, but when it’s set on a shallow setting (e.g., 1/64), it functions like a super belt-sander. I built a work bench using scrap wood to build a butcher-block top. After gluing and clamping all of these pieces of crappy wood together, the surface was quite uneven with lots of glue residue. With this planer, I was able to get it completely level and smooth in about 30 minutes. I can’t imagine how long the sander would have taken. It’s very easy to use….the only thing you have to pay attention to is the cutting depth. As others have mentioned, the chip collection bag fills quickly. I just gave up on it and let the chips fly…the big clean up later was less worth than dealing with the little bag.The only other minor complaint is that the depth control knob needs to have a lock. Since the planer is controlled by your front hand holding onto the knob,it’s a bit too easy to twist the knob during use which changes the cutting depth.

It did a fantastic job on wood that is over 200 years old! See picture!!! Worth every penny!

  5. Wayne J

Nice and handy tool and like most WEN products it performs as well as those costing three times as much. Good thing I ordered it because as soon as it arrived I needed it. I was building a workbench and had driven 10 dowels 5/8 in. in dia into the cross members of the bench but several were just a tad too long…..say 1/8 “. No problem. I grabbed my new planer, set it to 1/32 in and made a few passes on each. Problem solved. The cut was glass smooth and the power never wavered and this was cutting cross cut on oak. To further test it out I did several joints and all were glass smooth. The machine has a V groove on the bottom for doing chamfers. I tried this out and was impressed. A must have tool and for the price….. it can’t be beat.

I made a work bench top from cheap boards. This planer cut 1/8 inch swaths with no problem. It was way faster than I expected! It made the finer cuts with ease. The tiny dust bag filled in about 10 seconds and chips went everywhere so I will never use it again without a dust extractor set up, but I’m happy otherwise.

This is a GREAT tool. I received it today and am learning how to use it. I’m a beginner at wood-working; but I’ve hand-sanded many pieces. This awesome gadget is a splendid assistant and prevents a lot of arm-weariness. I’m glad that I decided to order it. Thanks to the WEN production team for this price-wise, but very useful, planer

  8. Amazon Customer

The Wen electric hand planer cost about $42. For that price I can easily overlook the minor adjustments I had to perform on the blades to make them parallel… and yes there are set screws (hex-heads) to raise and lower the blades to be parallel and even. It is so similar to other brands that it makes me wonder if they are all the same but with different plastic bodies and different useless fences???I don’t use an electric hand planer much, but to hog off some thickness on a twisted board, or true up a board that is too wide for my thickness planer it does the job just fine. I’ll always finish up with a non-electric hand plane anyway. If I really felt like spending the time I’d curve the blades a bit so they don’t make such a ledge, but why bother. I don’t expect a finished surface from one of these machines… even a $300 one is still essentially just a wood hog. This hog saved me some time and carpal tunnel distress. If it breaks down in a year, I’ll still see it as a good deal.If you only use these machines every once in a while, I’d highly recommend it. It totally works and works easily. If you use them all the time, I can’t comment on its longevity.

I purchased this based on price because it is a tool that does not see a lot of use,but let me tell you that you will not be disappointed by this planer.I have been adding on a sun room on to the back of the house. Most of the lumber was good grade but as I was getting close to the end I decided to use some old lumber I had in the garage instead of buying more. A few of the 2x4s I used were a little warped and twisted. I went a head and used them for the framing on the old brick wall. When putting up the paneling I noticed the twisting was worse than I thought. Thinking how to work around this I decided to use the planer. This resulted in planing almost 2/3rds the thickness (and very quickly)for about 2 1/2 feet, but hey it worked well.Since then I have used this several times on different projects. I feel that if you buy this planer instead of any one of the more expensive big name brands you will not be disappointed. I would buy this same one again if needed.

I had a couple of closet doors that would not close all the way due to the house settling over the years. The problem was at the top of the doors. Using the Wen to take off about 1/16 of an inch of wood along the top of the door fixed the problem and now they shut just fine. I did not remove the door; just got a step ladder and planed along the top while the door was still attached.Note that the instructions say never to plane across the wood grain to avoid splitting at the edges of the piece. Well, I did not have that option so I decided to give it a try anyway. I placed a piece of masking tape around the front top edge where the plane would exit the surface on completion of its pass. That seemed to fix the issue and splitting of the edge was almost nonexistent.I had considered using a belt sander but did not want dust all over the room and it would have taken much longer. The chip catcher bag on the Wen works quite well and clean up was minimal. If you have doors that stick or don’t close, this tool has a very good chance of fixing the problem as long as one edge of the door is too high to permit closure.
