10 reviews for Wemo Insight Smart Plug with Energy Monitoring, WiFi Enabled, Control Your Devices and Manage Energy Costs From Anywhere, Works with Alexa and the Google Assistant

  1. Jillian MacDougall

I purchased the Wemo Insight Smart Plugs so I could 1. schedule certain lamps to switch on/off automatically and 2. monitor how much energy those lamps use (since they were being left on almost 24/7). I am happy to report that I was able to set up both Smart Plugs in a matter of minutes. The directions were clear and simple. They started working as expected immediately. I have not had any issues with them at all. I plan to buy a few more and have been looking into the light switches, too. The plugs were a little larger than I expected, however, they do not block the 2nd outlet.

First I want to say I’m confused by all of the bad reviews I see. I really question if they are real reviews or if people don’t understand if they pay for slow internet you might have WiFi issues. I also see a lot of reviews from people who are not verified purchases.I bought 2 Wemo Insight smart plug in December, 2018 and use them every day with both HomeKit and Alexa everyday. I wanted to track the energy usage since I used these in the winter to run space heaters. In the spring I move them to my porch and control lights and fans. I do update the firmware every time it lets me know there is an update and I have had ZERO issues with any Wemo plugs.I 100% recommended these and the Wemo Mini plug over all other plugs on the market and haven’t read one bad review that doesn’t make me think that it’s not human error.

Want the ultimate for home-automation? This simple little device is a great way to control anything that plugs in – either with scheduled on/off, remote on/off or even automated on/off based on “rules”.Here are some of the options:* Remotely power on/off any device from your iPhone or Android (from home or away)* It apparently also works with voice commands for Alexa/Echo (but I could not test that)* Set a specific on/off time – by day of week* Set on/off time based on sunrise/sunset* Set other rules using IFTTT – you could probably do something like have the lights go on when your mobile phone joins your home network (for example)* Hook any number of these up to your home network to control everything in your houseI noticed a few people complained that when the power went out, or when they moved it from one plug to another, they had to reconfigure it. That’s not the case with the one I use (the firmware upgraded right away, so maybe this is a problem that was fixed). I configured it while sitting in front of the TV on a nearby plug, then moved it to a different room of the house and plugged a lamp in. It took 30-60 seconds to reconnect to our Wifi after plugging it in, and after that it worked just fine.I also noticed that some complained that they have to open the app to control their device because there are no “widgets” for it. Maybe this is an update, but I did notice a widget app for it (which I have not tested). There is also a button on the top of the plug that can be pressed to manually power the device on/off.One review said that this covers two outlets. That’s not exactly true. If you put it on the top outlet, it leaves the bottom one open for almost anything else to plug into (some oversized plugs may not fit). You could not, however, plug two of these in above and below each other.I do see some similar devices at a lower price on Amazon. But I’ve not been able to test those and they appear to have a larger and less attractive footprint. The only negatives I’ve noticed so far: it occasionally seems to “unlink” from our Wifi – so I can’t control it with my phone (it always comes back within a few seconds, so it is a minor annoyance). And when remote (not on my home network) the WeMo app on my phone takes a ridiculous amount of time to start up (again, a small annoyance since I rarely need to power anything on/off when I’m not home).

I bought this switch to remotely control a light for my reptile and also to keep the light on a set schedule that I could modify with the seasons and it has worked perfectly for this. I had no issues following the instructions and getting it connected to my Wireless-N network. I don’t use the energy consumption feature of the switch but prefer the Insight model due to the smaller size. The phone app has been intuitive in setting up the schedule and I haven’t experienced freezes or crashes so that’s a plus. I also integrate the switch with IFTTT to send me notifications whenever the switch is on/off and it has also worked as expected. I would be willing to purchase more of these whenever I go further down the home automation road.

I bought the wemo smart plugs to use instead of have to put in switched outlets. Right out of the box, it was super easy to install and get set up. The energy monitoring is neat, and the ability to set multiple schedules is convenient.I’m not going to call them issues, but the two things I don’t like: installing the app and getting a second phone configured was a little more challenging than I expected. Also, the outlet is also a little bigger than I was anticipating. I was hoping that I might be able to get one to put outside under a weatherproof cover, however even with the expanding outlet cover I currently have, the wemo device is too big to fit under it.Now that I have two, I plan on buying more.

Comes boxed very neatly. Included very clear instructions. It’s almost as if they designed the instructions to be as simple as possible. I had no issues hooking the 3 I own up. They are synced to my phone and I can monitor power usage. I have them currently on my Christmas lights, my entertainment center in the living room, and the small entertainment center in the loft. The Christmas lights are on a timer so the convenience of that is great. I don’t have to walk to the garage (1st world problems) to unplug the lights. My children are bad about leaving the tvs on and my 2 year old will randomly turn them on and leave them on. Huge power drain considering that the Wemo is reporting that the tv drains 300WH using only the screen saver. Monitoring the power usage through this Wemo, I dropped it to around 200WH by playing with the brightness and backlight. Over all, very useful. My only caution is that once you start adding these to your home, it becomes addictive and you want to make your entire home “smart”.

I plug my 120V EV charger into this Wemo, works great. No overheating issues. No loss of signal issues.I like that the app estimates how much the electricity costs are for this plug, it seems to be pretty accurate.I don’t have any issues that the negative reviews have. Stay connected to WiFi all the time. Never disconnects. So its nice to be able to use alexa to turn the plug on and off.And is robust enough to handle my 120V EV car charger without any heat or burning issues.I think it might be overkill for simple turning on lamps, but I think its a good unit if you want to use it for heavier regular use.

I bought one of these on sale so I could reboot something remotely if it died while I was away, but I started by trying it out on a lamp to see how it worked. I liked the way it controlled the lamp so much that I bought two more, one for another lamp and one for my original remote reboot application. They’re super simple to install and connect to your WiFi network and feature-rich. You can toggle them on-demand with the app, or use the app to set up a schedule. The best part is that you don’t have to invest in a hub to connect these. Essentially the app becomes your hub. They also control any device that plugs into an outlet, from LED lamps to air conditioners.I guess one of the differences between this and the older WeMo switch is the power monitoring capability of this model. Very useful to check the power consumption of your devices and see real time status. However, you’ll need to calibrate the switch to the power use of the device you’re controlling. Originally my LED bulbs did not consume enough power to show as on in the app, which appears to set the threshold at 8W. WeMo makes calibration easy by providing a button in the app that lets the switch detect on and off state power usage and set its own threshold, which for the LEDs turned out to be 2W. I seriously love these things. The only thing that could make them better is to include a dimmer function at some point.

These Wemo Smart Plug are great. Worked as described. At nights I must get up to administer some necessary medical treatment to myself. I had to call someone to turn on the lights for me in the room. This fixed that. Now I sleep with the phone on the bed and when I awake, I use the Wemo App to turn on the light. The second one I use to turn on the light above my computer because I cannot reach the switch. Love them. Make sure to update the firmware when you download the app. This will help with any bugs that are present. I had no problem with connecting both devices. Easy setup and a very convenient device not only for those that are up and about, but definitely, also for those like myself that has health restrictions. Thank Wemo for helping We 🙂

Review Update! They finally did a Firmware Update & it fixed the problems I mention below.I have changed my review to 5 stars now.Old Review.Until the Last Firmware Update I would have kept my review at 5 Stars, now I can’t give it any stars because it sits in a drawer.I specifically bought this 15amp unit for my coffee machine. It worked perfectly until the most recent firmware update. Now as soon as it turns the coffee machine on, it shuts itself off. It works on all my 12amp Wemos still, But my coffee maker is 15/12amp just like the Wemo. It’s to late to return it because I have had it for over 2 months. As a side note the coffee machine is a high end brand, its also brand new, UL certified, etc.VERY DISAPPOINTED.If they FIX the Firmware I’ll put my rating Back to 5 Stars.I take it out of the drawer and try it out every other week.
