I rarely write reviews. But there are times when it seems necessary, if not only to promote the quality of a product, but to challenge the inadequacy of other negative reviews. From the reviews of the nay-sayers who’ve whined regarding the flimsy quality of the plastic backing, I’m flummoxed. I bought three rolls of this stuff prepared to be working in my socks for the entirety of the project. So I laid out my first run with a ‘kid gloves’ mentality. And for no reason. The plastic backing is tough. I’ve walked across and over it (in boots) for the better of three days with the result of zero damage to the material. I’ve laid down multiple lengths of flooring to allow it to climitize and still no damage. Finally, I’ve installed some 1200 square feet of ‘click’ flooring, and still, with no damage. I really don’t know what these other installers were doing given their complaints of damage or the ripping or tearing of the material. As for the difficulty of cutting the material, ????. All I can guess is that these DIY’ers are less competent than the average bear (fyi: coming from a seasoned professional with decades of experience). Simple application. I lay it into and up against the edges and corners. I use the blunted edge of something (scissor handles work well) to achieve a crease. Taking a razor knife, I slice a line through the plastic backing at the crease to achieve a template for cutting. I then take a decent pair of scissors and cut along my templet. A bit of fine tuning results in a clean functional fit. I could have simply used the razor knife for the complete cut, but couldn’t remember where it was I’d placed my supply of blades. No doubt they’ll appear soon enough now that I’ve finished the install. The product was delivered intact with no damage. As I’ve stated, this stuff is tough. I can only see that it’d take a whole lot of abuse to damage it in transit as some describe. At that point, send it back and let UPS deal with the fallout. Finally, as for the complaint that there were numerous times where lengths had been patched together with tape. Not in my experience. I bought the big rolls and having worked through three of them, there was no seaming. The rolls were complete and intact, arriving as a single run.Now for the product. Excellent. That adhesive strip and the overlapping plastic made for a quick effective seaming. As stated, the plastic backing is tough and adheres strongly to the fiber matting. The matting, itself, is a consistent and firmly compacted substrate (about 1/4″), which rolls out easily and cuts without too much hassle. The uniformity of the product made for an excellent substrate, one devoid of irregularities. All in all, the installation was a breeze. Other than my assistant (bless’m) forgetting to shut one bedroom window, which resulted in some square footage being soaked by an overnight squall, all went without a hitch (fortunately had enough flooring remaining to replace the damage. Bamboo just don’t much like water).Would I use the stuff again? Definitely. Any complaints? Zero. Would I recommend the product? Absolutely, given that it was one proper for the application.

We’re replacing our entire upstairs floors w Pergo and are using this underlayment (we’re 90% complete). We like this underlayment a lot – it’s been very easy to cut and layout. Walking on the floors isn’t super loud through the rest of the upstairs or when listening from downstairs; the Pergo has some padding to it as well, but the underlayment helped a lot. It was much cheaper than Pergo’s underlayment as well. It also has a reasonably pleasant feel on your hands, which was an added perk.

  3. Jonathan Cupples

This is a high quality underlayment that will work well with just about any floating floor situation you’re working with. It comes in a 5′ roll so it’s a load to handle, but that works out well for you as you start laying it down. It stays where you put it and doesn’t lift or blow around if you should have a fan running. Sound dampening is excellent, and it doesn’t give a hollow sound when you walk on it with healed shoes, which has caused me to pull flooring up in the past to replace underlayment. It’s good stuff, and it’s priced for just about any budget.

great stuff. Only complaint is that there were some areas where the cushion was bunch up. Not in a way that you would expect from just being rolled wrong, where there would be a wrinkle or something. This was in a way where structurally there was more fabric pressed into one area which made like a seam, a 1/2″ think worm running 6-8 inches long. Hard to explain, but had to cut it out. The green moisture barrier is not very resilient. If you slide your hammer across it while trying to hammer the board in place it sometimes will tear there moisture barrier. All in all though it is really a great product. Thick and really help with the sound and giving the floor a nice soft feel. Used it to lay vinyl planks over tile to soften the grout lines and it def did that. Two thumbs up.

These rolls are a great price for a great product. I bought this and a smaller size roll to do a floor with. They beat anything I found in stores or elsewhere online with padding and a vapor barrier. Once installed the floor went over it perfectly and it added almost the perfect amount of padding for my laminate flooring, maybe its a tad bit on the squishy side but that is just personal preference, not a dig at the product’s quality. During installation this stuff stay put and I’m confident it will help keep the floors safe from moisture damage up from the slab. I’ll be buying this every time I put down laminate flooring from now on.

Been a flooring contractor for 25 years , this is the best I’ve used, yeah tough to cut, but that’s why they made utility knifes. The thing I like most about the product is say you have a dip in the floor (never run across that ever 😉) instead of having a spot that pushed down whenever you walk in, you just cut some strips and slide them under the spots that are high and dip is gone I’ve built up spots 3 layers high and I was shocked at how firm it still felt, I figured it would have felt like asponge, but not at wish I would have came across this stuff 10 years ago.. I totally recommend it

This was perfect for Noise reduction. My wife and My daughter are heavy foot walkers and “Princess Thunder Foot” now wants to move up stairs to the Penthouse Suite. So I am remolding the unfinished space. House is all wood and old hard wood floors transmit sounds to the lower Ceiling like a Peavy Amplifier at a late 80’s Techno Club. So I layed this down then a layer of 1/8 fiber board on top of that, finishing it off with Vinyl Planks. AAAHHHhh the sound of Silence. …..More or less.

  8. Jeffrey Gray

I put in 600 sq ft of 3/8 inch snap lock engineered hardwood from the local home improvement store. I decided to try this Roberts 70-193 Super Felt Underlayment, based on my extensive online analysis methods. I remember doing this same kind of flooring in a previous home 15 years ago, and I dreaded the upcoming frustration in dealing with foam sheets and getting them to stay in place long enough to get the planks down. So, I made the decision to upgrade to a better underlayment this time around. I am quite happy that I made that choice. This heavier felt product stayed put when I rolled it out, and the seams were a breeze to join with the built in adhesive strip. Shaping to fit was done with an 8 dollar pair of standard issue Fiskars scissors, which cut through the material quite easily. It was kind of a chore to deal with the width of the roll at 5 feet, but I made the penny pinching choice over the smaller size that the product also comes in, so I can’t fault it on that basis. By the time I got to the sections that required a lot of cutting, I had the methods all figured out. In the end, this product delivered by Amazon came in at a lower cost than the cheap foam stuff would have cost me to pick up at the Home store, and let me and my teenage daughter focus on the important task of deciding which flooring plank goes next. Five Stars.

I bought 800 sqft, two rolls big and heavy, but that’s what I expected. Rolled one out after taking measure measurements, perfect straight along both edges, so measuring and marking for cuts was fine. This underlay is heavy duty and you should purchase a nice set of fisk scissors for the task, otherwise you may struggle with a craft knife (stanley) or other scissors. The underlay stays put when down which was a huge help, as I was covering quite a space, just have to adjust at times so it was snug in corner etc. They’re not kidding about sound reduction and absorbing, I wear size 15 boots and you could hardly hear it when walking on the laminate later.Joining the strips together was a breeze and if you make an error overlapping the lip to the sticky strip, it’s easily lifted and adjusted, just don’t press too hard when first marrying the two together.Would I recommend this product? 100% I would, doesn’t tear, have bumps or move when cutting, excellent padding for a great price.I do hope this helps you choose what is appropriate for your particular job or DIY. I will post some pics, they’re on my tablet later today. =)

I used this under my vinyl plank flooring and it adds a great feel under foot vs. installing the flooring over the bare concrete. Very easy to lay out as it lays flat without moving. I had a hard time cutting it with scissors, even kitchen scissors, and wound up using garden shears.I started the layout with the tape strip against the wall and this helped hold the first row of flooring in place until I got going good. I also had no trouble with snagging the vapor barrier with the planks like one reviewer noted. But you need to lift and place each plank and not slide it across the vapor barrier. My choice of felt over a foam underlayment was because the foam underlayment can compress in high traffic areas. I’ve seen laminate floors that loosen and creak in hallways with a visible sag where people walk. The felt doesn’t compress like that so I expect it to last longer.
