10 reviews for Portage Bay 50251 Hugger 52″ Matte Black West Hill Ceiling Fan with Bowl Light Kit

  1. Ruth A. Nave

Loved how silent it is at any speed. Replaced the bulb with a hundred watt equivalent LED. Gives a feeling of space ( ours is an all-white option ) and looks great against white textured background. It hangs down only 11.5″ and does not overwhelm the small room like we thought it might. I think it runs about 75 watts altogether and we know we’ve got great value. This unit will run 24/7 through June, July and August without the light. No bad smells, ticks, wobbles or heat from the housing after 72 hours straight. A big YES!!!!

Straight forward installation. The fan fit perfectly into the existing ceiling electrical box so no modifications were required during installation. The instructions that came with the fan kit were easy to follow and all the required parts were in the kit. Connected everything up and it worked as designed.

Great fan! Installs fairly easy in spite of no instructions included with fan I bought. But then I’m a genius. Your results may vary…..Very quiet and moves a lot of air. I use it in room with my wood stove to circulate air and prevent my smoke alarm from going off all the time. It works exactly as I hoped it would. If I liked it anymore I would think about marrying it. Highly recommended!!

I’ve owned and installed MANY ceiling fans in my life time….I’ve seen and heard it all. Overall, briefly, these are the best ceiling fans I have ever had my hands on….good price….good quality…very quite and excellent clean crisp appearance. This fan…is unique…in that it can be used in a simple decor or a more elegant decor…it just has that right “eye appeal”. My wife and I are so happy with the two we purchased….$ for $ ….best ceiling fan.

If you are reasonably skilled with mechanical things and comfortable working with electrical wiring, installing this fan is a bit tedious because of the number of screws involved but generally easy. I used it to replace a roughly 50-year-old fan that was installed by the original owner of my home. It was in an addition to the original house, and from what I have seen it looks like he ran out of money when the addition was about 80% built and had his children finish the job. The old fan was attached directly to drywall by two small screws – There wasn’t even an electrical box. So I bought a Westinghouse Saf-T-Brace mount and installed that first. My only complaint is minor – With my large fingers I found it challenging to install the three small screws that hold the light fixture to the body of the fan. I kept dropping them, until I thought of using a dab of Earthquake Wax on the end of my screwdriver.I like the fan a lot and would buy it again.

Great product, easy installation. I paid more for a fan for my son’s room and the way it installed was crappy and its not very stable. This fan was the typical install, I’m an HVAC guy by trade, and I’m very pleased with it’s performance and price

Installation was quick and easy. The quality seems to be very good- better than I expected, really, considering the low cost. The blades are reversible with a true black on one side and a brown-black wood grain on the other. This thing moves a lot of air! I was looking for a low profile, low cost fan to replace a hideous old brass and brown fan in the house that I am renting. The only deficiency so far is in the included bulb. It does not put off a lot of light. I will try to put in a stronger bulb and see it that helps.

First time to install a fan. The first one went up just under an hour and a half and the second went up the next day without looking at directions in 50 minutes. (That includes time to take the old fans down.)Very impressed with the ease and speed of installation. Super quiet and no need for balancing. Supports independent light and fan control wiring (and has the option to not include the light if needed).Three speeds provides excellent controls and is capable of moving air really well – high speed can be felt in the far corners of our room (2 fans in a 16′ x 24′).One fan blade was noticably nicked on the brown wooden side. We’re using the black matte side, so it didn’t matter, but had this been our intended color it would have been a letdown. All other blades were a-ok on both sides. The light IS a bit dim compared to most overheads, but we typically only use lamps in this room anyways. It’s a calm living space, not a space for tasked activities. We’ll actually use these overheads more now since they’re not blinding as with the previous fans. (This is all preference and how the space is used.)The chains provided were equal length. We wanted the fan chain to be lower so it’s obvious which chain is which, so the lengths we’re modified. This isn’t an issue though since we would have shortened both chains anyways. So happy with this purchase!

I NEVER write a review but I wanted to for this. Usually you get what you pay for so I am cautious about getting something this “affordable” however it really did turn out to be a great fan. The people complaining about air flow or the brightness of the bulb are annoyingly naive. It comes out of the box with the fan direction set for Winter so it moves the air to retain heat not dissapate it, you can flip the switch on the motor housing and fix it in 3 seconds. As for brightness its plenty bright but if you really want more JUST BUY A BRIGHTER BULB. Additionally it comes with an endcap adapter if you just want the fan and no light. No lemons here.

I actually ordered four of these, based on look and price. The downstairs half of my home has only 7 foot ceilings, and previous owners installed some fans with down-rods and all with exposed lights. I hate exposed lights, and at 5’11”, down-rods do not work for me on low ceilings. I’d resigned myself to the belief that my head would always hit the light fixtures on a ceiling fan, as there needs to be room for the motor, etc, but I can walk under these! I have a good couple inches’ clearance, which is such a huge relief after the old ones. Also, I didn’t know how tough it is to pull the chains on some ceiling fans until the other replacement we got last year; these ones are smooth, and placed properly so there’s no issue.I’ve installed three so far: two in the family room, and one in a bedroom. All three were easy to install, they all work perfectly, and they’re all very secure. I didn’t think I’d be finding a dark metal fan at this price, and I just couldn’t be happier with the purchase.
