LXT and Star Protection Computer Controls

It’s part of Makita’s expanding 18V Lithium-Ion series, the cordless tool line-up powered by an 18V Lithium-Ion slide-style battery. Makita 18V Lithium-Ion batteries have the fastest charge times in their categories, so they spend more time working and less time sitting on the charger.

For improved tool performance and extended battery life, Makita created Star Protection Computer Controls. Star Protection is communication technology that allows the Star Protection-equipped tool and battery to exchange data in real time and monitor conditions during use to protect against overloading, over-discharging and overheating. For increased versatility, the tool can also be powered by Makita 18V LXT and Compact Lithium-Ion batteries with the star symbol on the battery indicating Star Protection inside.

10 reviews for Makita XPK01Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless 3-1/4-Inch Planer, Tool Only

  1. Cameron Rankin

If you are already team Makita 18v Cordless this is a great planer to add to the collection. Otherwise there are many corded options out there that work great. Highly Recommended Tool.

  2. G. Kempen

Had a lot of doors that were jamming shut at the top, or weren’t closing because they were painted too thick for the frame, or were installed in winter and expanded with humidity in the summer…. One pass with this beast and they all open & close like a charm now! Gotta be careful about splitting the wood if you go forward off the edge, across the wood grain of course (doh!).I have not tried it (yet) for planing on greater than one width of the tool.

  3. GenerallyCurious

Easy to use, built tough, and uses the Makita batteries we have lots of. I’m just a weekend piker – but all weekend pikers have doors/doorframes that get out of whack with humidity and foundation shifts. Trimming a door is like buttah – and fast, very accurate/straight/level. Wish it was brushless but I can’t imagine I’ll run this thing out of brushes any time soon.

This cordless planer is great. It’s a little tricky when you first start using it, but after several passes you get a feel for it. The depth selector is nice. It does leave a decent amount of snipe at the end of the board so plan for that. Battery life is decent, but really depends on the wood and depth you plane. This tool seems to be made for right handed people. I’m left handed and when I use the planer with my left hand the dust port is facing me and spits out the shavings on me…..so consider using a shop vac when using it. It also has a built in stand to keep the blades elevated off the surface when you sit the planer down.

  5. JimFeet

I used this planer on two large rough sawn slabs of 8/4 ponderosa pine, 30″ x 96″ from a local sawmill. I needed to clean one rough face for a picnic table project. These slabs were too large and heavy for my wood shop so I worked outdoors. The cordless feature made this work much easier and although the 3-1/4″ width required multiple passes, cleanup with a belt sander was far faster than sanding alone. The results exceeded my expectations.

  6. RF=GOAT

Cordless planer is definitely a big plus. I tried corded version of the Makita planer but found it to be not level — no matter what I tried to adjust that model nothing helped. Note, that corded planer requires additional adapter to collect chips with shop vac unlike the cordless version which comes with a round exhaust piece.Very satisfied with this product.

  7. fredC

I put it to use almost immediately right out of the box on a job where electrical outlets were either a half mile away or on a portable generator.Planing warped screen doors on a cabin in the woods was a snap – produced nice clean shavings. With a fully charged BL1850 battery – I had no issue planning 8 doors – but didn’t put it through an all-day workout – so I’m not sure about how long it would continue to work.It probably will not fully replace my corded planers but for what I purchased it for – I love it.Mine was made in the UK

  8. Greg Camara

I have had many corded power planes and always wished they were cordless. This one is not only that but makes an amazingly smooth surface as well. A game changer. Makita has always been tops with powerplanes. I also have their larger powerplanes for timber framing and they are excellent as well.

  9. LED Enthusiast

I love this machine. It quickly took care of leveling my big hardwood work bench including end grain without any effort. I had been hand planning it for several hours prior and this finished the job in a short amount of time. I had a couple of slats that had squirrelly grain in it and was having a hard time with my jack plane going over this area. It would chip out, but the Makita planer taking shallow cuts and going slow would just smooth this up, getting rid of the chip outs. That made a big difference in completing the leveling of the top.It is lightweight and easy to use, both on flat surfaces as well as working on the sides. One draw back is that the chip exhaust is only on one side and if you have to go a specific direction, such as it pointing up plaining on the side, it goes in your face. You could get a collector bag as an accessory, but it would have been nice if Makita had an elbow that would fit the exhaust port so you could direct where the dust/chips go. I have since purchased a smaller dust hose that will fit it and that should help control the chips going everywhere.

  10. David Wilson

I’m an amateur DIYer, and this tool allowed me to fix protruding studs when prepping for drywall. Without this planer, I had no idea how to solve the problem. With it, I was able to take nearly 1/4″ off a stud in just a few minutes. With the hose of my shop vac plugged into the outlet port, there was no mess.
