10 reviews for Makita XAG04Z 18V LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless 4-1/2” / 5″ Cut-Off/Angle Grinder, Tool Only

  1. Tony

I use this on all my projects that require an angle grinder and have permanently put away the corded one. No more cords to deal with, all that I have to do is pick this up and go. Very powerful and portable. Definitely a robust build. Last pretty long even on a 3.0 Ah battery

  2. SageTheWiser

For Professional Trade use – this angle Grinder is precision and effortless. You will want to use 5Ah Batteries for continuous use on Steel as it will obviously drain your batteries. We use the “Ultra-Thin” Cutoff Wheels( .032″ ): https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0199RA4UU?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title -This tool is absolutely Engineered for Long Term Daily Use. IMHO, this is Hands down the best Battery Powered Angle Grinder available. Liked it so much I bought a second on for my other Crew.

Makita for the Win, this grinder is awesome. It cuts like a corded grinder, very handy when you don’t want your cords running everywhere on the work site, I’m a welder so one less cord around me eliminates the “rats nest” and also, if you have the bigger 18v battery I recommend using that one because this grinder will eat up that power on the smaller batteries. But it’ll still run good, depends on how much you’re using it. I love this thing, best investment I’ve made on this grinder.

  4. UncaWoody

This grinder is no joke. It is the real deal.I make sawdust, not sparks. So, why a ‘side grinder’? All the trick flap wheels, chainsaw blades, cheese graters you ever wanted to use…fit this tool. My favorite accy (at the moment) is the 5″ soft hook pad for the same abrasives you use with your orbital sander. I have never used a more aggressive ‘hog’ sander!Battery life is…well, battery life. I get all the time I need out of a 3ah Makita battery. [I don’t use off-brands…not with the brushless tools being stuffed full of propritary electronics] I have yet to run the tool long enough to drain a battery, but have several ‘hog’ sanding sessions of 20-30min at a time, and fresh 3ah’s come back at 2 bars.Locking ON switch. Some like…some don’t. I’m golden with it. Requires a dedicated motion of the switch to lock ON, and a tap from any angle to stop.Fit, weight and balance are perfect for me and my size 9 hands.I ordered my grinder while standing in front of an orange box store employee who swore to me Makita not longer made a cordless 4 1/2-5″ angle grinder with a 5/8″-11 arbor. “They only make these new ones now. You hafta buy their accy’s to fit their new arbor.” I think he was even more miffed when I dropped of the empty box two days later…hehe.Great buy, and has become one of my go-to tools.

  5. Trudy Veselka

This is our second Makita 18V grinder, and we love it. The other one is still in use, and we have had it for a few years but it is not Brushless. We do like the brushless compared to the non-brushless because our grinders get heavy use and the brushless motors last longer and don’t seem to require as much repairing.I like the ability to take the handle off and switch handle sides, the disc changing is easy as well. The grinder accommodate any discs we have tried so far.

  6. Robert W.

This grinder is a little bulky and heaving (with battery), but I find myself using it all the time because it’s portable…..I’m not tied to an electric outlet or an airline. This is the tool only no battery comes with it so if you already have other Makita 18 volt tools, chargers and batteries, it’s a great addition. I like mine and would recommend it.

  7. Peter @Railandstilewoodworks

I have a lot of stock in both Milwaukee and Makita cordless tools and corded tools. So when I needed a new grinder I knew it had to be cordless, brushless and one of these 2 brands. I had owned the brushed Milwaukee and didn’t care for it, and have used the brushless Fuel version, which is so much better. However when I was looking at the Milwaukee compared to this Makita I couldn’t overlook the $60 price difference, so I went with the Makita. After using it for several weeks of grinding and cutting steel, I have to say…its a fantastic tool! Its got plenty of power on a 5.0 battery and will go for several days of intermittent use without draining the battery. Its not much heavier than the corded versions with the 5.0, and its so convenient to be able to work untethered. Of course you can run the Milwaukee until the cows come home with the 12.0 battery but who wants to carry that monster?? The next one I buy will be the XAG09Z for the electric brake, its worth the extra $25 to be able to just set it down after you switch it off and not have to wait for the wheel to spin down or grind on something to stop it. Sorry Milwaukee, I see no reason to spend the extra money for the Fuel unless you needed the extra runtime and don’t mind holding the weight of a giant pack.

What I ordered was a Makita 18v cordless angle grinder, what I received was a paper weight with the name Makita on it. Item was absolutely DOA. The tool was definitely used and not gently. Most likely a return that was not even tested just passed on with no worries on the part of the seller. I make my living with tools and will definitely keep buying Makita just not from this seller.

  9. Hutchy

I know I should wait longer before I review something like this, but if it breaks during the warranty period or other problems I will update my review. This is the latest in my Makita 18V LXT items. I have the 7 1/2 circular saw, the 18V X2 chainsaw, drill driver, impact driver and a really great light I got for Christmas. I am VERY pleased with all of them. They far exceeded my expectations. This system is so far advanced from the old NiCad cordless tool days. I know its expensive to get started, but do so. You won’t be disappointed in the way these 18V LXT tools perform. Now to the angle grinder itself. I was a little worried it wouldn’t be strong enough to use my cut off wheels on some 1/4″ sheet I had to cut. No problem whatsoever. I also immediately used it to cut out 2 – 20″ circles from 10 gauge expanded metal as grates in my burn barrels. Again, no problem whatsoever. Wore out one cut wheel and 1/4 of the next. Went on to change it over to the grinding wheel and ground down several of my bad welds. Actually made my bad welding looks way better 😉 I had plenty of batteries, so I bought the bare tool for just under $100 bucks. Well worth the price. I may never use my corded angle grinder again.

  10. Nick

Don’t expect this to perform like your corded grinder but it will definitely outperform your expectations. Has great power to do MOST grinding jobs around the house and in a small shop/garage. Cordless convenience is hard to beat.
