10 reviews for Evolution Power Tools EVOSAW380 15-Inch Steel Cutting Chop Saw

  1. Modern Pioneer

I own a professional manufacturing company and opt’ed out of purchasing a cold cut saw, instead purchased this saw.Coming from a abrasive chop saw, this saw is the Bee’s knee’s…. Coming from a cold cut saw this was a meh purchase.I have experience from a previous employer on a cold cut saw, but coolant and trace oils was a big issue in the fab shop. But like the cold cut saw, this saw, in the first 70 cuts of 1x1x.125 angle is perfect. If you don’t shove material in the blade, and allow it to cut. With little deburing, expected, it still performs….This is a dependable angle producing machine…. Know your angle from the blade, it performs as expected. As the blade wears, it starts to cut off, and there is a sweet spot to know, it has to be learnet….Overall, this is a good machine, but you have to be knowledgeable on how it will work for you….I did build my own stand for it, and measure side table, and I like it…

This saw is fantastic for cutting steel. I made approximately 40 cuts on some 1/4″ wall, 2″ X 2″ steel tube and it made fast straight and angled cuts that were almost burr-free. This is so much faster than my horizontal metal cutting band saw. The blade is still cutting like it did for my first cut. My only negative is changing the back stop to cut angles. The angle guide gets you close. I have to bring the blade down to set an accurate angle with a protractor; then it’s hard to see and it’s cramped, but I eventually get it, so it’s a minor inconvenience considering the time saved by the speed of the cuts.

This is an incredible tool. I wish I would’ve discovered it earlier. After 25+ years of fabricating with metal, this is definitely in the top five or ten tools that I consider game changers for me personally. I first did a lot of research and watched every available YouTube video and review available before purchasing. During that time I also watch several people make a lot of mistakes and learn from them. Do yourself a favor and learn how to do three things:1) Clamp your work piece properly! And support BOTH ends of a long piece of material. This will help prevent tooth loss (and injury)2) Learn the correct ORIENTATION in which to clamp material. There is a proper and improper way to clamp square and angled stock material.3) Learn the proper amount of down-pressure to use. HINT: very very little… let the blade do the work.(I’ll try to post some photos if I can figure this iOS app out.)

  4. Good Stuff

Excellent purchase.I am thrilled with this saw.I use it with the EVO steel blade that came with it.I let the saw get up to full rpm before I begin sawing and then use only the slightest bit of downward force.I take my time and let the saw cut at its own pace – no hurry. It cuts anything and produces nice clean cut faces that are ready to weld. There are far fewer sparks with this saw compared to a cheaper cutting disc. And I feel a lot safer using this kind of saw compared to a cutting disc.I was at my steel supplier recently and noticed that they were using this same model of saw to cut my 24-ft lengths of steel in to 12-ft lengths. That gave me confirmation that I had bought a good saw. They also sell the EVO blades for it; but seeing them using it in the back out of the public eye was a confidence builder.

The most important thing about this purchase is to educate yourself on operation. Placement of the stock to be cut and use of the vise all the while making sure long stock is supported and not bound up. All that being said this unit is exactly what I should have purchased years ago. I’ve used the abrasive chop saw in the past with poor accuracy and unclean cuts. This Evolution saw not only cuts extremely smooth clean cuts but also in way less time. Let the saw do the work as VERY little pressure is needed, the weight of the saw seems to be enough. I’ve been cutting 3″ x 1/4 angle iron with zero problems. 2x2x1/4″ square tube as well. Remember to educate on the placement of the stock to be cut, even the 2″ square tube is set on diamond like angle to make the cut (just an example) so educate yourself and you will have no problems with this unit. I’m a plumbing / HVAC business owner who is very experienced in construction.Good luck and blessings your way to all.CERNdog

I’m a professional furniture-maker, but metal is only 20% of my biz and I needed to upgrade a 1950’s era horizontal bandsaw and failing abrasive wheel chop saw. I’d been looking at $1,200-$1,500 bandsaws until I came across this saw and the newer generation of metal cutting chop saws. So far, I’ve made hundreds of cuts in tube, pipe, bar, and angle iron with no discernible dullness or degradation of the cut surface. I do take care to take it slow and take “bites” as I drop the blade, but it’s an incredible time-saver over my bandsaw or abrasive wheel… and, I just get clean chips of steel behind the saw vs. a cloud of grinding dust or coolant-covered parts. The motor of this saw feels robust and I wasn’t disappointed with the fit and finish of the machine. Setting it up and getting really square, accurate cuts right away was a breeze. Very happy with this purchase thus far.

The media could not be loaded.  So my first impression out of the box was it’s “crap!” The blade is not square to the table by a pretty big margin. So I found someone on YouTube with the same issue and he explains how to fix it. So I did what he recommended and shimmed the motor and got it perfectly square. See photos for shim I used and location on the saw. I took a few cuts and I’m extremely impressed by the saw. It really cuts steel like butter with no sparks whatsoever. Work slowly and don’t force the blade through the steel let it cut its way through. I cut pieces upto 1.5” x 4” with no problems. Although only about 25% of the chips make it into the box underneath the saw the rest are scattered around the shop like fairy dust. They glitter and shine as you walk by and catch a glimpse, these will surely end with rust spots pretty much everywhere. Wear all the protective gear you would expect when cutting metal and all will be fine. So 4 stars are for the required squaring of the blade which should be in the included manual otherwise I really like this saw. So I changed my rating to 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I’ve been using this saw for a bunch of projects and it is really a great saw. Once you get it dialed in it you can make repeated square cuts with no further adjustment. I have cut a multitude of different types of material with the same results and I would say it is nothing less than perfect.

Wore out my abrasive saw and decided it was time to upgrade, this is a serious cutting machine. Some what loud but no where as loud and messy as the abrasive saw. Much more accurate cuts than I ever achieved with the abrasive saw.I like everything about this saw, heavy well designed vise with a heavy cast base. I like the all metal blade guard. The only thing I don’t like but is not a show stopper is the safety switch location on the handle, I am left handed and need to use this saw right handed, the location of the switch also makes it hard to see the working side of the blade where the actual cuts being made.Overall I don’t think you can go wrong with this saw and the only caveat is that you take your time and feed the blade into the work using the supplied suggestions to the correct orientation of the material. I expect to get a long life out of the supplied blade, blades are on the pricey side.

Love this saw!! We use it in a commercial environment and really has sped things up. Guys in the shop have even used it for other non metal applications, one to cut up some occ pipe and another cut up some steel parts for home projects. Both we impressed with how it cuts. We’ve cut, 4” schedule 80 pipe, 6” schedule 80 pipe(have to roll and reset. Will explain later), 4” square tube with 3/8” wall thickness and even some 4”x1” plate. The only thing I was disappointed in is the fact that it says “15 inch” in the title of the sales page and they send it with a 14” blade? I bought it specifically for our shop BECAUSE of the 15” blade capabilities. Maybe I missed something in the description, we’ll buy a 15”.Overall however very pleased with the saw. We looked at Fein at the same time we looked at this. We have a Fein 9” circular metal saw, it’s an animal! The Evolution though had the 15” capacity which the Fein did not. If we need another one we may get the Fein and do a head to head comparison but for now the Evolution is a great saw.

It’s an amazing saw. It cuts great. The base is lacking a method of mounting it to a saw table / base. It would be beneficial if there were an indication on the saw platform that shows the minimum cut allowed for a 90 degree up to a 45 degree cut. Although the instructions mention a minimum cut of 5/16″ there is no reference to what angle of cut that applies to. I learned the hard way when trying to make a miter cut through 3/4″ inch square stock. ( see photos, the arrows indicate where the mitered cut off piece got lodged inside between the blade and guard. The guard was broken by the cut off piece. ) I recommend not cutting off less than 1″ of material to play it safe. Despite the learning curve of cutting restrictions such as the minimum cut off piece, the saw is performing very well. About 200 cuts in and only minor chips in a few teeth.Update: 12/05/2018This is one of our favorite tools. The auto-retracting saftey guard has broken probably due to the heavy use it gets. Covered under warranty. Customer service at evolution is stellar!!
