10 reviews for DEWALT 20V Max XR Oscillating Multi-Tool, Variable Speed, Tool Only (DCS356B)

  1. Donna M

This is an extremely light weight multi purpose tool. I like the trigger mechanism that allow you to gradually dig in to your product. So far, I haven’t had to move it to the “3rd” speed button. I find it easy to work with at the 1st level. This is lightweight and easy to hold with one hand. It’s also very quiet. It has lots of power and I haven’t had any issues with it cutting through wood. I haven’t cut through metal yet, but I expect it to behave just as well

  2. Bob Johnson

As an electrician that does strictly remodels this is an absolute essential tool. Being able to precision cut any material with a light weight tool is priceless.I upgraded to this Dewalt 20v from a competitor’s 12v. The Dewalt 20v is just as light as the competitor’s 12v. I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and battery life of this tool. As far as oscillators go, they just aren’t very ergonomic tools. The dewalt oscillators have an offset handle that do make them somewhat more ergonomic than the competitors’ oscillators.

This “DEWALT 20V MAX XR Oscillating Multi-Tool, Variable Speed, Tool Only (DCS356B)” is an excellent tool that you’ll find more and more uses for as you go. I use it mainly for making any kind of straight-in cut on a flush surface that would be much trickier for most other kinds of saws (e.g. making a cutout in drywall for an outlet box, or separating apart a wooden stringer glued to plywood without damaging the stringer or the plywood), and also, for sanding in tight corners (with a little triangular sanding adapter I purchased that fits the excellent quick attach mount on this tool). The more I use it, the more I find myself reaching for it on the next project. It’s simple and it works great. The battery seems to last plenty long for most the tasks I can imagine using this for (it’s not a “high volume” sanding or cutting tool, but for the specialized tasks it does so well, it’s perfect). One quibble: It is LOUD, with a very pronounced whine. This is inevitable with the high speed vibration/oscillation it depends on to function, but you will not want to use this at early/late hours when your neighbors are sleeping. Think of a gas-powered weed whip. Not as deep “throaty” of a sound as those revving engines may have, but a similar whine in pitch and volume. If you’re going to use it for more than a moment, it’s probably smart to don hearing protection, though I don’t actually find the volume level painful. It’s on par with a high speed random orbital sander, but a little sharper and more pronounced in its whine. Okay, enough said. Now you know.As oscillating multi tools go, this one seems well-built, effective, and ideal for someone who is already invested in the DeWalt 20V Max line of tools like I am. Highly recommended!

I do a ton of DIY Projects, currently working on kitchen redo. Needed this to remove old back splash tile. This tool is a must to get into tight corners, between cabinets and drywall, counter tops and drywall, I have a Jig Saw and Recip Saw, but this tool is the only way to go. I don’t know how I would have torn out all this drywall without this tool. I added two 36 inch under cabinet lights and needed to cut a little of the overhang on the sides of the cabinets, this tool is the only tool that could get it done. A must have tool, worth every penny, if it broke tomorrow I would order another one without question. 100 percent by this tool!!!!!

I am a oscillating tool fanboi now. Where have these things been all my life? I started out with my first, a Rockwell corded unit, five years ago. It worked fine but was a little clumsy to use – not very ergonomic – and heavy. This battery operated DeWalt is a dream to use. No annoying cord.I have other DeWalt 20v tools so I won’t groan about the cost if their batteries. They last long and are pretty rugged. Buy DeWalt batteries. The knockoffs are cheap and you’ll be sorry. I learned this lesson.I have used this tool for doing precise plunge cuts in OSB, plywood, snd drywall. And in other cases where my small circular saw or jigsaw or reciprocating won’t do. It’s great for doing birds mouth notching on rafters. I prefer Diablo blades over DeWalt and I don’t buy the no name Chinese discount brand blades. Like a cheap razor they don’t last. This tool is a winner. Very versatile.

This is my second one. Am professional and this is “the one” to get. Its self explanatory .But notice this model # against the slightly cheaper Dewalt, at lower cost…Homeowner had cheaper one. Yes, look the same. Yes, perform same function if oscillation. However NO, not near the speed, strength, torque under bindingThis one, you buy, be happy. Not sure why Dewalt does this across all their tools..but watch the specs

I own 1 of these already and a coworker has been wanting 1 for himself. So i bought this one for him for christmas. I ordered it yesterday morning and it got delivered yesterday afternoon.

I’ve been looking at these for a few years, wondering if I really did need it. I probably don’t need it really, but I’ve still found 101 uses for it from cutting a hole in the drywall to add an outlet to cutting away the cracked glazing on antique window restoration. It’s a great tool.

  9. John Bassett

Understand that you are purchasing the tool only. The battery is not included. I purchased this to replace a corded unit (from another manufacturer) that I burned up. This units is compact, light weight and is designed to be able to change the blades quickly with no tools. It also has a handy light on the front. I was using it a lot to remove grout from my tile and it does use a lot of battery in those “constantly running” applications. I think I used two batteries in approximately 30 minutes (but my batteries are several years old). The tool functioned exceptionally well and it’s so much easier to use then the corded units. I am sold on dewalt for all my power tools

While the description says “tool only” it does come with one each of a bi-metal and HCS blade plus an adaptor plate for non-DeWalt blades. Wish I had known that before I bought the blade kit, but oh well. Since I already have a DeWalt drill, charger and batteries there was no need to buy more of those so this was a great deal. There is one other consideration. DeWalt does’t sell the depth guide separately so you need to buy the three parts which make it up — the N275350 block assy, the N275341 metal rod and the N278801 knob. Amazon does sell all three.
