  1. Mr. Ed

Arrived as advertised, no surprises, just how I like it.Sharp enough out of the package, easy to resharpen.Easy to setup, easy to adjust. Very controllable in use.I used a friend’s professional grade, far more expensive, spokeshave. It was nicer, but the way I used it, not more than $50 better.I sculpt. Did it make me better? No. But it did make arms and legs nicely, less sanding and futzing to finish.I picked up the two pack not expecting to use the second one much. I must say it is nice to adjust one on an aggressive setting for rapid shaping and the other on a fine, smoother setting for final work. Important? Not really. Just nice.I do recommend. I will look for them again once I wear out these two.

As others have said, the entire spokeshave is painted, including the base. I tried one that way, once, and it left unsightly black marks. However it only took a few seconds to remove the paint and flatten the base on my disk sander, which makes me wonder why they couldn’t spend those few seconds at the factory. The blade only contacts the body at the two adjusting screws and at the mouth, and the mouth on one of these had a pronounced curve, so I squared that up with a file while I was at it. The blades were adequately sharp to shape mahogany out of the box. However the tooling marks were plainly visible on the blades which affected the smoothness of the cut, so I touched up the blades with a 2-grit oil stone and a strop. The end result was an edge sharp enough to smoothly shave maple. While I was at it I used the stone on the newly-ground bases. The end result may not be as pretty as the $100 ones but they certainly do any job I ask of them, and the price can’t be beat.

These are nice for the price and it is good that you get two.Even straight out of the box they will make some ok shavings. After a bit of tuning they will make excellent shavings. Polish the soul, flatten the blade and sharpen it. I think I had them both tuned up in 30 minutes. The blades are good steel and have held their edges.Adjustment is a pain on these entry level shaves, but you get two of them. I have one set for a more aggressive cut and the other one for a fine cut. I painted the handles on one so I can quickly tell what one I have.

  4. Drake M. Davis

These are made in China. The blades are sharp, but need to be finely sharpen. The bottom of each shaver is coated in black enamel paint & this has to be removed. Before using, check to make sure the bottom edge is completely flat. Mine were not which I expected for the price I paid for them. After removing the parts, I turned over the shaver & filed off the paint & made the shaver flat by filing the bottom surface. I then finely sharpened the blade & reassembled each tool. They’re perfect & shaves great.

I’ve recently taken on woodworking as a hobby. Despite all these fancy new tools to choose from I still feel the need to justify each purchase. This set of spokeshaves had a such a nice price it was easy to purchase them without a thought.I’m glad I did.First of all, I had never used a spokeshave. I’m still pretty certain I am not pronouncing it correctly. At such a low cost, however, I wasn’t hesitant to figure them out. The blade was sharp out of the box. I got a full project in before I sharpened them for the first time. Between these and my block plane I was able to make fully rounded shapes. There is one negative to them that I noticed but if you are aware early on then it won’t be an issue. The black paint will rub off on your work. All it took was a little sanding to remove the paint from the tool and it has not been a problem since.I can’t speak for pros because I am not one. For a newbie to the game these are a great way to learn how this tool operates. Highly recommend!

For the price, this is a very good value. Used this be of them right out of the box to shape a guitar neck I am making. Worked beautifully. Nice clean shavings. Easy to adjust. I have no complaint not at all. That said, this is my first experience with a spoke shave and have nothing to compare. I’m sure there are far better tools, but for my purposes, this works great. I will take time to sharpen the blades and expect even better results.

I bought these partly out of curiosity and also because I needed a beater spokeshave for a project I was working on and didnt want to ruin the irons on any of my really nice vintage spokeshaves. Have to say I was more than impressed. Let’s be honest, quality control is what it is. The sole of the tool is not flat and the iron is not either. Knowing this before I bought it, i knew it would need some work to get it right. I stoned the sole flat and flattened the iron and put a hair shaving edge on it. About 20 minutes per tool. While I’m sure it won’t last 100 years like my old Stanley’s, it performed just as good and far exceeded my expectations. Contemplating ordering a handful more of these just to have some extras. Works great with alittle effort. Seriously folks, for 10-12 bucks, you can’t go wrong.

  8. Dale Ternes

These two are exactly the same. So can either give one to a friend, or I am going to try what another suggested: set one for fine shaving, and another for courser shaving. I really like the fine tuning of the brass thumb screws. I think larger wood planes should have these also. Allows you to perfectly dial in the thickness you want and also insure it is even from one side to the other.

  9. Jim Notto

These may be the best tool purchase I have ever made.I have been using them for almost 2 years now and they continue to perform amazingly well. I have only had to strip the blades occasionally to keep the very sharp edge.I still find it hard to believe the results they produce at such an extremely low price.
